How Chess 2 works

Original v2.4 rules plus our Classic king–rook swap house rule, with standard starting positions. Win by checkmate or safely crossing the middle with your king (both kings for Two Kings). Having no legal move is a loss, not a stalemate.

Each player starts with 3 stones, maximum 6. Taking an enemy pawn earns one. A defender can challenge a capture; challenging a higher-ranked attacker costs one stone. Both players secretly bid 0–2 stones. All bids are spent. Ties favor the attacker. If the defender wins, both pieces are removed. Kings cannot duel. Two zero bids let the attacker gain a stone or remove an enemy stone.

Only Classic castles. Classic also gets one king–rook swap per game: on your turn, select your king and then a highlighted friendly rook. Pieces between them and previous movement do not matter; you may escape check, but the king must end safe. It uses your turn and removes castling rights. Safely swapping across the middle wins by invasion. Choose an army before play; both selections remain hidden until locked. Colors swap on rematch. The winner keeps their army; the loser may change. Threefold repetition and 50 moves without a pawn move or capture are automatic draws.

Elephant rampages resolve captures in order; losing a duel stops the elephant. If a duel leaves the moving side's king attacked, that side loses. Ghost rooks block movement and survive whirlwinds. A rampage travels three squares, or to the board edge if closer.

Same-device play uses a pass-device screen for private decisions. Word codes are not passwords. Keep both pages open; games are not saved. Some networks block online connections.
